Overview

The bems (building energy management systems) controls engineer was approved for delivery on 03/02/2020. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

A BEMS Controls Engineer is commonly employed in the building services sector and provides advice and guidance on a variety of electrical, mechanical and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems.

As an apprentice, you will commonly play a key role in designing the building energy management system that controls a buildings services, heating, and power, in addition to both installing and maintaining them. You could work in industrial settings or commercial environments, working to combine and integrate multiple systems to help create ‘Smart Buildings’.

Some examples of the types of buildings that may utilise your skillset include historical buildings that are have integrity concerns, office buildings that want to maximise energy efficiency, or hospitals and other health care buildings that want specific clinical control over their systems.

You will work both on-site and in an office environment, and interact with a range of clients, owners and facilities managers on a daily basis in both the public and private sector; therefore, it is important to have a high level of professionalism and maintain excellent communication and presentation skills.
