What the course covers

The Bricklaying apprenticeship will teach you how to lay a variety of bricks, blocks and other building components in mortar, as you build, refurbish and perform repairs on walls, partitions and other structures.

You will learn how to prepare a range of materials, including how to mix the correct ratios of mortar and concrete and determine their quality and correct volumes for use. You will work prominently by hand but also learn to safely use a range of tools and machinery to support your work, including disc cutters and other power tools, as you experience working in environments such as new builds in homes, commercial developments and large-scale restoration projects.

As an apprentice, you will need to develop your knowledge of the health and safety requirements whilst working on a construction site, including COSHH/risk assessments and asbestos awareness, and how to use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). You will also learn how to read and interpret drawings and specifications and use them to measure the work area using laser levels and strings lines to ensure the highest levels of precision.
