Overview

Approved for delivery on the 04/10/2017, the building services design engineer (degree), Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 6, non-integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 60 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

With this apprenticeship standard, you will manage a team of engineers and technicians designing and installing various building services, such as water, lighting and heating, in buildings and other construction projects. You will lead on budget management, planning and the organisation of tasks and resources for a project, and take overall responsibility for its completion./p>

You will commonly oversee the management of technical and commercial projects, that work to design, install and maintain a broad range of services, including renewable technologies, energy management, drainage, ventilation, air conditioning and life-safety systems. You could work on new structures, refurbishments or existing infrastructure, in a consultancy or contractor capacity for many types of clients to ensure they comply with industry legislation.

You will learn to solve problems using your knowledge of mathematical, scientific and engineering principles, and underpin your decision with a firm grasp of electrical power theory and fluid dynamic theory, and the use of psychrometric charts to outline cooling and humidification loads. You will carry out research to provide advice on how to improve the performance of a building, and conduct site visits to identify potential hazards.
