What the course covers

Working under close but not constant supervision, you will work in both industrial and commercial environments installing components of large-scale systems such as heating and hot and cold water.

Using a basic knowledge of the scientific principles that underpin building systems engineering such as force and pressure, you will install components using pipework fabrication techniques to industry recognised standards. You will also assemble prefabricated or modularised distribution systems, positioning them in the correct orientation, and attach heat emitters, pressure vessels and controls. You will learn how to use a variety of tools necessary for the job, and how to store them correctly.

You will also conduct pre-commissioning tests and decommission existing hot and cold water systems in buildings such as schools, office blocks and factories, as you ensure they comply with health and safety legislation. You will also learn how to detect, identify and solve a range of issues and faults by applying your technical skills and knowledge, and communicate instructions clearly and concisely to other colleagues, tradespeople and professionals when appropriate.
