What the course covers

Dual fuel smart meter installers are responsible for the safe installation, exchange, commission, decommission and ongoing maintenance or repairs of smart metering systems and associated equipment. This involves explaining to the customer how their smart meter works and giving up-to-date energy efficiency advice.

This is a physical role, typically involving lifting and moving of heavy equipment, working at heights and in confined spaces. It is essential to follow strict health, safety and environmental regulations whilst carrying out the work. You will be working inside customers’ homes, so it is essential to be professional and polite while installing the meter.

Dual fuel smart meter installation forms an essential part of the Smart Government mandate to cut carbon emissions and improve energy management in the UK. Dual fuel smart meter installer should be energy-aware and have a good understanding of energy efficiency and environmental legislation. An essential competency measure of this apprenticeship standard, and a legal requirement, is professional registration on the Gas Safe Register and The Meter Operation Code of Practice Agreement (MOCOPA).
