Overview

This Advanced farrier apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 3, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 04/07/2019 and typically takes 48 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Farriers are responsible for the maintenance and care of equine feet using a holistic approach. It is essential have a thorough understanding of all aspects of equine hoof care throughout the equine disciplines, from casual riding through to elite competition horses. You may interact with Blacksmiths when it comes to making shoes for the horses.

You will be responsible for the quality and accuracy of your work, must communicate with others confidently and have strong problem-solving skills. You will develop strong expert knowledge of equine anatomy to enable specialist discussion regarding the condition of equines and their hooves with owners and other professionals, such as veterinary surgeons.

Daily work includes following strict health and safety regulations in the workplace, using expert skills to safely handling equipment and materials used in farriery, and specialist knowledge to identify the needs of a horse dependent on their breed and age.

Farriery is a regulated profession and all farriers are required to pass the Diploma of the Worshipful Company of Farriers examination before being admitted on to the Register of Qualified Farriers before they may legally practise.
