Florist

Using expert knowledge and skills to sell, arrange and cut flowers

Overview

The florist was approved for delivery on 10/06/2020. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 24 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship standard allows for apprentices to gain the training, skills and expert knowledge required to achieve a successful career as a florist. A florist is responsible for producing innovative and creative floral designs. This could include floral work commissioned for an important event, such as a funeral or wedding.

You will develop an understanding of where the botanical materials are sourced from, purchasing techniques, storage and the control of fresh stock to create accurate rotation on a day-to-day basis. You will learn to apply extensive knowledge of floral species, understand how to care for and condition these floral materials and plants, taking into account potential irritant or poisonous species. You will learn about the variety of stem structures and show appropriate cutting, watering and feeding methods.

A florist must operate in a way that minimises damage to the environment and maintains a safe working environment consistent with relevant legislation and codes of practice. You will organise and be responsible for prioritising your own workload, so good time management skills are essential.
