What the course covers

A funeral director has overall responsibility for arranging, conducting and managing the funeral as per the clients and deceased wishes. This apprenticeship standard will enable apprentices to gain the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a successful career as a funeral director. Funerals are typically an emotional time for family members, relatives and friends of the deceased, so this profession requires sensitivity, compassion and understanding.

Day to day tasks include planning and coordinating arrangements and resources for funerals; overseeing pre-funeral checks; ensuring the funeral meets the needs of the client; assisting in the preparation of coffins and the deceased; and delivering aftercare services. You will also act as the first point of contact for colleagues regarding specialist funeral-related services including exhumation, military funerals, and burial at sea.

You will develop strong leadership skills, acting as a role model, mentor and coach to the funeral team. On the day of the funeral, a funeral director briefs and leads the team and is the central point of contact, coordination and escalation of feedback.
