What the course covers
Journalists work without supervision to produce relevant and up to date stories on news and events usually directed for the people in a local area or community. The role of a journalist is to bring people news and information in a clear and accessible manner. Usually, this information is in writing for newspapers and websites; however, journalism can also be through the medium of images and videos, for example, for news media TV channels.
A journalism apprentice on this course will need to be hardworking and a determined attitude as the hours can often be demanding and unsociable. A junior journalist must have an interest in current affairs and be politically attuned to engage thoughtfully in news stories. It’s essential to be a curious and inquisitive person with a strong ability for written communication. This apprenticeship requires a commitment to fair journalism and relaying truth information to a relevant audience, through a medium most accessible to that audience.
An apprentice will be trained in how to produce a good story, from conception to research, by interviewing and building a reliable portfolio of information sources and contacts. This section of the job requires interpersonal skills and professionalism to make a good impression on potential contacts.
