Personal Trainer

Coaching clients to reach their health and fitness goals.

Overview

The personal trainer was approved for delivery on 08/08/2018. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 15 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Personal trainers train both individuals and small groups in health and fitness to help them reach their personal goals. Apprentices will learn how to design a creative and personalised fitness and exercise programme for each client. These programmes will not include exercises appropriate for that client, but also any relevant nutritional advice, health instructions and any general lifestyle management advice.

Apprentices must learn when to refer their clients to the relevant healthcare professionals and not merely assume a role you are not qualified for; for example, a client may need to see a dietician, a doctor or physiotherapist for help that you cannot provide. It is your job to motivate clients to make positive changes that are right for them to improve their overall fitness and wellbeing. You will be utilising all your knowledge of health and fitness to provide tailored advice to a whole range of clients, from those who find exercise extremely challenging, to more advanced athletes.

Typically, personal trainers work in gyms and leisure centres. Once you are qualified, you have the option to become a freelance trainer. Because of this, apprentices will also learn business, marketing and financial skills to ensure you understand how to find clients and manage a portfolio of paying customers.
