Road Surfacing Operative

Surfacing and resurfacing public and private roads.

Overview

This Intermediate road surfacing operative apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 03/07/2019 and typically takes 15 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Road surfacing operatives are responsible for the surfacing, resurfacing and improvement of vast stretches of the public and privately owned highway network, covering all road types from motorways to residential streets. This work can be physically demanding; predominately takes place outdoors and can involve working outside of regular hours.

Apprentices will develop the skills necessary to safely operate a wide range of specialist machinery such as planers, asphalt pavers, emulsified bitumen sprayers and compacting rollers. Typical duties include removing existing surfaces using a mechanical breakup process, preparing the underlying road surface, and aligning and compaction of the new surface. Following the completion of the work, you will visually inspect and test the new surface to ensure full compliance with the specified design.

Road surface operatives will work as part of a team of between 8 and 14 people directed by a supervisor. You will perform multiple roles within the team, including machine driver, machine operator, roller driver, rake hand, planer driver, and planer operator. Apprentices must develop a safety-first attitude, learning how to carry out works without risk to themselves, others or the environment.
