Overview

Approved for delivery on the 07/08/2018, the technician scientist, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 5, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship involves carrying out laboratory investigations and experiments using a variety of routine and advanced specialist skills.

Within this apprenticeship you will follow the established principles of your organisation’s science and technology. This could relate to chemical, biotechnological, or pharmaceutical products and analytical services.

You will carry out routine lines of enquiry working safely and ethically under highly regulated conditions due to the hazards that some scientific processes can present. It will be required that you critically evaluate the appropriateness of commonly used approaches to solve routine problems using a range of methods to pull together evidence.

As you will be working as part of a wider team of laboratory scientists and technicians, it is essential to use appropriate project management procedures to contribute effectively to solutions. You will be required to carry out record keeping and regular checks alongside the use of data capture systems that are most relevant to the scientific and technical procedures you perform. From this you will analyse scientific information and interpret and evaluate data, collating results and presenting progress updates in relation to your work.
