Veterinary Nurse

Overview

Approved for delivery on the 08/08/2018, the veterinary nurse, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 30 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

A veterinary nurse will work within a veterinary practice to provide supportive nursing care for a range of injured and sick animals, and forms part of a wider professional veterinary team.

As an apprentice, you will develop your knowledge of anatomy and physiology in relation to veterinary nursing practice, and the form and function of body systems in a range of species. You will also understand infection control and the principles of disease transmission in animals, and use this knowledge to provide a range of nursing care to animals admitted to the veterinary practice, under industry legislation and its associated guidance.

The role will involve the preparation of records, equipment and resources, storing them in suitable locations and disposing of them appropriately. You will also, manage and perform effective infection control procedures and communicate effectively, appropriately and accurately using a variety of methods.

After successfully completing the apprentice, you will be awarded an accredited Licence to Practise Veterinary Nursing qualification, and be eligible to apply for professional registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
