We are happy to announce that we have an exciting opportunity to join the team at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology based at Leeds General Infirmary as afull time Apprentice Healthcare Scientist.

The Apprentice will be trained to perform:Routine investigations without supervision, EEG routine, EEG portable, EEG with sleep deprivation+/- sleep, EEG during the administration of drugs/alternative activation procedures. Basic NCS (ie/ CTS/ULN),Basic VER and SSEP and assist with EMG.

Main duties of the job

The apprentice training post works towards gaining qualification, experience and knowledge in Neurophysiology.

It is a 3 year fixed term position, which is a fully funded and salaried under the NHS Terms and Conditions ofService Annex 21 (Arrangements for pay and banding of trainees).

The apprenticeshipcomprises of a 3 year structured training program of hospital based clinicalwork with academic elements provided by the University.

Thepost holder will be required to undertake the Healthcare Science PractitionerLevel 6 Degree Apprenticeship offered by the University of Western England(UWE) in Bristol. Learning is mainly via distance learning but requires threeresidential block weeks per year at the UWE campus. Upon successfulcompletion the graduate will receive the award of BSc(Hons) in HealthcareScience (Physiological Sciences).

Thepost-holder will be responsible for performing a range of investigations undera graded supervision program which will be dependent on the apprenticesprogress throughout the 3 years. The majority of the time is spentcarrying out clinical work, with practical and theoretical tutorials alongsideprotected time for self-directed learning.

Atthe end of the 3 years upon successful completion of the BSc and clinicalcompetency assessments the apprentice will be eligible for application for aqualified Band 5 Healthcare Scientist/Clinical Physiologist position should thedepartment have an opening.

We are currently meeting newservice demands within this large teaching hospital where all the major specialities,both adult and peadiatric are covered.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be working on an annex 21 of a Band 5 physiologist.

Following successful qualification the post holder will be qualified to band 5 level.

Person Specification



  • A Level grade C or above in Biology or Chemistry and a pass in another science subject.
  • GCSE Grade C or above in English Language, Mathematics and Double Science
  • Knowledge of Neurophysiology to degree level and/or equivalent (working towards this as an apprentice)
  • Specialised in-service training as a trainee to attain relevant professional qualification (working towards this as an apprentice)
  • Practical experience to perform routine and non-routine neurophysiological investigations and procedures (working towards this as an apprentice)
  • Desirable

  • ECNE/ANS part 2
  • Teaching and training qualification.
  • Neurophysiology specialist courses
  • Post qualification training to enable assistance/performance of advanced techniques.
  • Experience


  • Knowledge of some advanced neurophysiological procedures.
  • Willingness to develop more specialist neurophysiological competencies.
  • Knowledge and ability to interpret routine neurophysiological investigation results.
