Bioplant Apprentice – Level 3
Our Bioplant team are responsible for ensuring that the wastewater from our pharmaceutical manufacturing processes is treated in an environmentally friendly way. We process around 130,000 tonnes of our own waste per year and also provide services to external companies in the area and work closely with Northumbria Water and the Environmental Agency.
As a Bioplant Apprentice you will work towards a Level 3 City & Guild Diploma in Process Technologies with our local training provider. You will also complete accredited units in biology so that you can build the underpinning knowledge required for the role. You will gain experience in a range of environmental and lab-based processes in an active biological waste-water treatment plant.
Your role will involve carrying out operations in compliance with safety and quality standards, operating plant and processes within the Bioplant in accordance with training and procedures, carrying out equipment checks, analysis of samples and cleaning of equipment.
On the 36-month program you will typically attend the training provider’s facility as well as working on site where you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and learn from our team of experts within a hands-on real environment and will be appointed a mentor within your team to support you on your apprenticeship.
You will also complete an end point assessment in the last year of your apprenticeship to prove you are competent in the required knowledge, skills and behaviours for the role.

Requirements for the role
- Must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9 in Maths, English and Science or equivalent.
- Desired – 2 A levels, including 1 Science, Maths or Engineering.
- Must be prepared to follow a course of study to gain a formal qualification.
- Must have an active interest in environmental sustainability.
- Must have a good level of Health and Safety awareness.
- Be competent with IT systems including MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
- Be proactive in finding solutions to problems.
- Be able to identify areas for improving your work environment.
- Able to work individually as well as part of a team.
- Takes responsibility for the quality and accuracy of work.
- This is a physical role, operating a busy waste-water plant.
