The successful candidate will undertake a new exciting role for a 3-year apprenticeship training programme who will be studying HealthCare Science. This training period will require a willingness to learn and grasp the knowledge and skills required to be a successful Medical Device Technician, based at the Brighton General Hospital

The first year will set the foundation, which will lead to a BTEC Level 2 Diploma, and once achieved will lead to a Pearson BTEC Level 4 Diploma, and form part of the apprenticeship programme.

The EME apprentice will be supported and supervised by the SCFT Electro Medical Engineering Team. The key objects will include learning and being equipped to commission, repair, calibrate, maintain and dispose of a wide range of medical, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for use in patient care at the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The EME Apprentice will provide clinical technical services, under supervision, for preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection and repair to a wide range of medical equipment.

Communicate with clinical users and senior technical staff to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment. Under supervision, assess the seriousness and implications of the problem and respond appropriately to the urgency of the user request.

Under supervision, undertake basic level of fault-finding. Apply suitable fault finding techniques to diagnose problems, including those beyond the scope of manufacturer supplied information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The EME Apprentice will carry out calibration, quality control, safety and acceptance testing under supervision until signed off as competent.

Participate in medical equipment commissioning, evaluation, supervision of loan, rented or hired equipment under supervision until signed off as competent.

Check that equipment performs to manufacturer’s specification under supervision until signed off as competent.

Carry out electrical and functional safety checks in accordance with IEC 60601 under supervision until signed off as competent.

Liaise with senior technical staff to carry out planned preventative maintenance under supervision until signed off as competent.

Qualifications
Essential criteria

  • 3 GCSE’s (or equivalent) in mathematics, English and a science or technical subject at Grade C or above
  • Skills
    Essential criteria

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, with good writing skills (Courses Assessments will be required)
  • To possess an excellent attitude, with the ability to start and complete a 3 year apprenticeship programme.
  • Competent in computer skills, with experience of using Microsoft packages.
  • Willing to learn, follow detailed instructions and work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to attend training centres, as required
  • To understand work related boundaries and the ability to refer matters of importance to a senior colleague
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Knowledge
    Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate an interest in the technical, electronic and medical device servicing field.
