Ocean Ecology Limited is a marine ecological consultancy that specialises in providing marine ecological surveys, analysis and consultancy services to feed into EIAs, monitoring programmes and research projects.

As part of our continued growth in the UK and overseas we’re offering a number of Laboratory Taxonomist apprenticeships positions in our Gloucester and Plymouth laboratories. These roles will provide the successful applicants with an excellent opportunity to learn about the workings of a commercial laboratory and a unique insight into the rapidly growing marine consultancy sector.

The experience gained in this role, will lead you towards the completion of a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship. This structured qualification will help you to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to thrive in the role of Laboratory Technician.

What it’s like being a Laboratory Taxonomist Apprentice

As a Laboratory Taxonomist apprentice at Ocean Ecology, you’ll become an integral part of a rapidly growing company with highly dynamic team. The role will include in-house training in processing marine samples as well as training on identifying marine species.

Some of your main responsibilities will see you helping with the day-to-day upkeep and running of the company’s laboratories. You’ll be assisting with different stages of marine sample analysis, including sieving, extracting biota from sediment, biomassing and assisting with particle size analysis. Alongside this, you’ll be accountable for the general upkeep of client and in-house specimen reference collections.

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to continue your journey with the company on a permanent basis within the laboratory or to explore different sectors.

So how does the apprenticeship work?

Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Ocean Ecology who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

The Package

  • Salary of £14,000 per annum
  • 37.5 hour per week
  • Monday to Friday with flexible working hours between 08:00 – 18:00
