Material Science Technologist Degree Apprenticeship

Duration : 4 years

Education Provider: Sheffield Hallam University

An opportunity has arisen to join the Materials Testing Laboratory in Stevenage, which forms part of the Airbus Defence and Space Engineering Department.

You will have the opportunity to handle and test space hardware, some of which will be used for the future Sample Fetch Return project destined to bring Martian samples back to Earth.

The Materials Laboratory in Stevenage is one of 3 labs in our domain, with our sister labs in Portsmouth (UK) and Friedrichshafen (Germany). Depending on need, there may be opportunities to visit these sites.

About us!

The Stevenage Materials laboratory is a fast paced environment, testing around 9000 samples a year for various projects.

We are a small dynamic multi-skilled team providing Materials testing support and analysis to scientific programmes and to telecommunication satellite programmes. Our laboratory use a wide range of equipment and testing techniques and will offer you exciting opportunities, and challenges, to learn.

Through materials testing we ensure that flight hardware meets the exacting requirements needed for the space environment.

You will be based in Stevenage, however the education partner is Sheffield Hallam, so you will spend roughly 6 weeks a year in Sheffield during learning/education weeks. All accommodation will be paid for by Airbus HR.

What you will be doing:

As a Materials Laboratory degree apprentice you will be gaining experience across all areas of the laboratory, spending time being trained by the highly knowledgeable members of the team.

You will conduct different types of testing, analyse results and data, which will be used to write technical reports. The work is varied and time dependent, with deadlines to meet our internal customer needs.

Our expertise is often required to solve unexpected material issues, requiring a team led approach to solve problems, and involve collaboration with engineering experts. Regularly creative thinking is required to provide the solution to the problem.

A culture of continuous improvement exists and a strong ‘speak up’ culture; allowing us to constantly improve our processes.

Skills:

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

  • 112 UCAS points including at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC. National qualifications to include mathematics or a mathematics-based subject to at least AS level. For example:
  • BBC at A Level including mathematics or a mathematics-based subject plus at least one other from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology, chemistry or other science or technology subject. 
  •  DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a science or technology-based subject (including passes in mathematics and two other science or technology-based modules).
  • Or; 

  • A combination of qualifications which must include mathematics or a mathematics-based subject and may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies.
  • Or;

  • Equivalent qualifications
  • You will also need to demonstrate the following:

  • A proven ability to listen, understand and communicate information
  • The desire to work in a technical team environment
  • An interest in carrying out laboratory testing
  • A strong interest in developing yourself
  • Good investigative skills and creativity to solve problems
  • Must be a ‘team player’ and collaborate well with others
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills to interact with other departments
  • A willingness to learn and understand the test technique/equipment
  • Basic IT skills (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc)
