Motor Vehicle Apprenticeships

Motor vehicle apprenticeships are some of the most common apprentice positions out there. The automotive industry is huge and there is a constant need for more technicians and engineers.

What Do I Need To Start a Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a good option for young people, but do have some entry requirements. You often need four GCSEs including Maths and English at grade national 4 and above, but this can vary depending on the employer.

You should also have a keen interest in motor vehicles, and ideally know a little about them. This can be difficult, you can start the apprenticeship at 16, which is before you can even pass your driving test.

What Motor Vehicle Apprentices Learn

What is it like to take on a motor vehicle technician apprenticeship?

During an apprenticeship, you will learn how to service, maintain and repair a huge range of motor vehicles. You could be working on anything from cars and vans to buses and lorries.

Skills you will learn include:

  • Electrical systems. An understanding of electronics within motor vehicles including fuses and electronic components.
  • Engine maintenance. Learning how an engine works and what sort of maintenance it needs, such as changing oil.
  • Vehicle diagnosis. Finding out the issues with a vehicle and diagnosing how to fix them.
  • A knowledge of car parts and specific vehicle systems such as exhaust systems and brakes.

An apprenticeship in this industry tends to be hands-on, and you will be working with an experienced motor vehicle technician. This is a great way to learn and develop your skills.

What Level Are Motor Vehicle Apprenticeships?

Level 3 motor vehicle apprenticeships, also known as “Advanced” apprenticeships, are most common. This is the equivalent of passing two A-Levels. It is a more practical alternative to A levels.

They typically take up to 24 months to complete.

Benefits of a Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship

There are many benefits to taking on a motor vehicle apprenticeship:

  • You will be earning while you learn. Apprentices earn a wage, which is below minimum wage in the UK, but it may be better to get paid, rather than having to pay for your studies.
  • You gain practical skills and experience. This can give you an advantage when it comes to finding a job after your apprenticeship.
  • You have the opportunity to earn qualifications to add to your CV.
  • There are many different potential career paths once you have finished an apprenticeship, such as vehicle technician or service manager.

These are just a few of the reasons to take on an apprenticeship.

You may find apprenticeships with big companies such as car manufacturers, who regularly need technicians, but it is also possible that you’ll find roles at a smaller independent garage and spend your days helping with services, MOTs, and basic repairs while you gain your qualifications.
