What the course covers

This apprenticeship standard aims to increase the level of training available for people who want to work in an abattoir. To operate, abattoir workers must have a valid licence known as a certificate of competence. This is so they comply with legislation such as the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing, issued by the Food Standards Agency.

Working in an abattoir requires empathy and respect for animals, alongside the ability to take responsibility for health, hygiene and safety. As the slaughter industry is now mechanised to a great extent, you will be learning how to use various types of machinery throughout your training.

Teamwork makes up a huge part of this job role, alongside leaning to work professionally, behaving in line with Standard Operating Procedures. Individuals with a dedication to their apprenticeship can progress to managing the slaughter-line or other related operations following the competition of the standard.
