Working in the navigation department on ships and vessels, carrying out a range of practical tasks, keeping watch and maintaining safety and security.

Overview

The able seafarer (deck) was approved for delivery on 27/08/2015. This Intermediate apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 2, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The role of an Able Seafarer includes tasks such as watchkeeping duties, maintaining safety of the ship, staff and cargo on board, navigation, anchoring, mooring and ropework. The training will include a period of being taught practical seafaring and watchkeeping skills, in conjunction with knowledge and theory that abides with both national and international sea time regulations.

Working a shift rota over a 24-hour period, an able seafarer will work both individually and as part of a team. It is crucial to abide by all practices and regulations, to avoid endangering yourself, others or the environment. You must be comfortable with working at heights and within enclosed spaces, alongside being able to respond to emergencies, administer first aid, carry out fire-fighting and prevention, use survival techniques in the water and be able to operate rescue boats.

After you have completed your qualification, you will be able to work on board any type and size of ship around the world. The regulations set are by the International Maritime Organisation and are integrated into practice by the UK Maritime and Coastguard agency.
