Advanced Forensic Practitioner (Custody or Sexual Offence)

Using forensic sampling, toxicology and documentation of injuries to gather evidence for a statement to support the criminal justice system

Overview

Approved for delivery on the 19/07/2019, the advanced forensic practitioner (custody or sexual offence), Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, non-degree qualification upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Aimed at healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and paramedics who play a key role in the forensically examining alleged victims of sexual assault crimes, the Advanced Forensic Practitioner apprenticeship will provide learners with a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Forensic Practice in either Custody or Sexual Offences upon successful completion.

  • Sexual Offence – Working with victims of sexual violence, the practitioner will develop a care plan that meets the needs of the victim
  • Custody – The forensic practitioner will predominantly work with detainees in custody, and conduct both physical and mental health assessments to determine if they are fit for interview and support their human rights

Areas covered as part of the apprenticeship include the development of knowledge around courtroom etiquette and the principles of building a statement, how professional bodies provide a framework for practitioner conduct, and how to identify different injury types and recognise their contribution’s as forms of evidence.

Apprentices will also learn how to resuscitate an unconscious person, assess a patient for acute or historical sexual abuse, provide oral evidence in court, obtain the valid consent of victims, and take evidential samples including skin swabs.
