Making and repairing upholstered furniture
Overview
Approved for delivery on the 30/09/2019, the advanced upholsterer, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
As an Advanced Upholsterer, you will produce upholstered furniture using a range of advanced skills and techniques as you develop your knowledge of the wider Furniture, Furnishing and Interiors industry.
As part of the apprenticeship, you will be taught how to accurately prepare and cut a wide variety of fabrics, make frames and joints, and apply suspensions to them. You will learn to create ergonomic furniture using a combination of modern and traditional techniques, specialising in one of them as you progress further along your apprenticeship journey.
- Option 1: As a Traditional Upholsterer, you will create individual pieces and renovate or re-upholster existing or antique furniture by hand, using materials such as coil springs, animal hair and wadding.
- Option 2: As a Modern Upholsterer, you will understand frame construction and add padding, springs, and coverings to modern furniture such as sofas and beds using a wide range of modern techniques and equipment.
You will need to be confident in your ability and show enthusiasm for your work, whilst always promoting your company’s values. You must have a safety-first attitude and adhere to health and safety guidelines, as you commit to achieving quality standards and maintain accuracy in your work.
