Overview

Approved for delivery on the 03/09/2015, the aerospace software development engineer (degree), Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 6, non-integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

As an Aerospace software development engineering apprentice, you will play a vital role in the development, modifications, and upgrades of systems that control a variety of aircraft. Working in primarily software engineering, you will also experience aspects of Modelling and Simulation, Human Factors and Systems Engineering to build a grounded knowledge of the industry.

A grounded knowledge of coding is essential for this apprenticeship, as you design, test, and modify software engineering artefacts for the sector, ensuring it complies with the associated requirements. You will also learn to read and interpret engineering data and evaluate it, before reporting your finding to other colleagues and management.

As an apprentice, you will gain experience with using the methods and tools used to build software process and modifications, as you apply systems engineering principles and understand the criteria for making architectural decisions to come to an effective solution to potentially conflicting system objectives.

You will initially work under the appropriate supervision of professionals before taking on additional responsibilities as you progress through the apprenticeship and make more valued contributions to software designs and even manage your own projects.
