Overview

This Higher air traffic controller apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 5, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 16/08/2019 and typically takes 15 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Air Traffic Controllers are employed to direct a range of aircraft safely through controlled airspace throughout the day, tracking them at higher altitudes, issuing instructions to plans as they approach the airport or providing clearance for take-off and landing.

As part of the Air Traffic Controller apprenticeship, you will communicate continuously with pilots, as you build safe distances between each plane and react swiftly to changing events. Your work will be fully supervised by a qualified professional, as you cover all the core aspects required to start working for a variety of Civil and Military employers across the industry.

You will need to be an extremely confident communicator to succeed in this job role and demonstrate resilience and strong problem-solving skills when dealing with the pressures that come with being an Air Traffic Controller. You will also need to dedicate yourself to continuously develop your skills and knowledge, and keep up to date with new systems and processes.

To abide by European and UK laws, apprentices must obtain an EU Class 3 medical certificate and a Student Licence before qualifying and starting work.
