Providing regular care to domestic or wild animals
Overview
This Intermediate animal care and welfare assistant apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 08/08/2018 and typically takes 12 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship will teach you how to provide practical routine animal husbandry support for animals with a range of specific needs, including those recovering from veterinary procedures and treatments, or may be pregnant or have behavioural issues. You will build a basic understanding of animal anatomy and phycology, and the early indications of potential problems with their health and welfare.
You will learn how to the characteristics of animal breeds specific to your role, and how to meet their individual needs, including feeding, watering and basic nutrition. You will also understand how to safely approach, handle, restrain and transport animals, and their accommodation and environment requirements. As an apprentice, you must remain professional at all times, taking personal responsibility for your work and show respect and tolerance in a variety of situations.
You will have a variety of options to choose from as part of the apprenticeships including: Animal Interaction and Handling, Rehoming; Movement and Transportation; Operational/Reception Duties; Breeding; Working Dog Handler; Wildlife Rehabilitation, Veterinary Care Support. Each option has its own specific set of core skills and knowledge and will set you up for a career within a dedicated specialism.
