Carrying out laboratory procedures on a range of animals
Overview
Approved for delivery on the 09/06/2017, the animal technologist, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
As an Animal Technologist, you will be taught how to perform complex scientific procedures on a variety of laboratory animals, following strict welfare legislation and regulations. You will also learn how to use a range of scientific equipment in complex environments, producing studies for universities, research organisations and biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies.
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will be able to understand the industry and its ethical responsibilities, codes of conduct and its policies on diversity and equality. You will develop the skills required to complete in-vivo procedures and aseptic techniques on animals, and learn to recognise their pain and distress. You will also be able to collect and evaluate various forms of data, assessing your results and presenting them to senior colleagues.
Apprentices are expected to have good knowledge of science, animal anatomy and phycology, and need to be able to communicate efficiently with the team and broader research sector, such as veterinary surgeons and welfare officers. You must also be able to manage your time effectively, and respond to change quickly and efficiently.
