Delivering training for a variety of animals

Overview

The animal trainer was approved for delivery on 22/11/2018. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The Animal Trainer apprenticeship is designed to provide you will the knowledge and skills to plan, manage and deliver training to a range of animals, from specific tasks to general training. You will use a range of methods and techniques, such as reward-based training or obedience training, as you help coach owners on how to handle, groom and examine their animal appropriately.

The majority of animal trainers work with service animals such as dogs for the police, search and rescue and armed forces; however, you may also have the opportunity to work in other sectors with other animals like horses, dolphins and elephants. You will learn to deliver teaching both in-person and remotely, providing a series of classes or one-to-one support.

As an apprentice, you will need to be confident with handling all types of animals and understanding of the challenges faced by their owners. You will also need to be patient with your subjects and their handlers, well-organised and understand your responsibilities and duty of care under animal welfare legislation.
