The planting and felling of trees

Overview

This Intermediate arborist apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 27/06/2017 and typically takes 24 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Working in the arboriculture industry, you will oversee the maintenance of trees in a variety of settings both urban and rural, working in city parks, on country estates and private gardens of all sizes.

You will learn how to inspect and surveys trees, educating landowners about providing better care for them whilst explaining the benefits they bring to the wider community. You will be taught how to safely operate a range of tools and tree-felling techniques such as chainsaw work, pruning and dismantling, and how to use larger machinery like brushwood chippers and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP).

Other skills you will learn include safely setting up the workspace by placing signing in appropriate places and assisting with traffic control, how to identify diseases and tree defects, and understand the principles of environmental and wildlife codes of practice.

You will need to be prepared to work entirely outside in all weather and prepared for physically demanding jobs as you carry out tasks on behalf of private companies, private authorities, and small businesses. You will have to work well both in a team and individually, having precision and consistent in your work at all times.
