Overview

Approved for delivery on the 11/07/2019, the archaeological specialist (degree), Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, non-integrated degree upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The Archaeological Specialist degree apprenticeship is designed to provide aspiring archaeologists with the knowledge and experience to undertake a variety of specialist investigations and research programmes within the industry, meeting the professional criteria outlined in the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).

You will perform and lead surveys, excavation, post-excavation analysis and scientific analysis of archaeological data and materials, and prepare your findings for further study and long-term deposition. You will learn how to recognise different types of archaeological sites, periods and artefacts, and the fundamentals of site formation. You will also develop techniques and methodologies specific to specialist research and understand how to apply these in the appropriate environment.

As an apprentice, you will work effectively as both part of a team and individually, and be able to apply leadership techniques effectively as you lead studies and research projects. You will be aware of the requirements of formal publication, including the expected standards for writing and editing, and the fundamentals of relevant health and safety procedures.
