What the course covers

As an Archaeological Technician, you will work on excavation sites and laboratories as you provide support to professional archaeologists by undertaking surveys, assisting with the extraction and recovery of artefacts and samples and assisting with the gathering of data.

The apprenticeship will develop your knowledge of the wider industry, as you gain experience working in private, public and charitable sectors for a variety of organisations. Your primary duties will be to process samples and artefacts obtained from an archaeological project, washing, labelling and sorting them, and facilitating their transition to archive.

You will learn the fundamentals of British archaeological practice and chronology, know how to recognise various archaeological site types and periods, and understand the purpose of Written Schemes of Investigations (WSIs) and project or research Designs. You will be able to estimate the timescales, deadlines and work locations of upcoming projects, and compile risk assessments to reduce the chance of accidents occurring.
