Overview

The assistant puppet maker was approved for delivery on 18/12/2019. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

This apprenticeship standard will support you with both designing and manufacturing a range of puppets for performances on TV, film, theatre, and other art forms. You will work under the supervision of a senior Puppet Maker or a team of technical and performance professionals and provide you with the knowledge to make fast repairs, choosing the right materials to aid their preservation.

You will look to provide care for puppets, including their storage, transportation and manual handling and give advice and guidance to their operators. You will also learn the fundamentals of designing a puppet, as you produce details technical drawings and bring them to life using a range of hand tools and machinery suitable for the job, whilst ensuring you meet the health and safety requirements for each piece of equipment used.

As an apprentice, you will need to have a broad understanding of the industry and what goes into delivering performances both live and recorded, and its creative principles. You will also learn to understand the properties of a variety of materials used to make puppets, such as wood, rubber, plastic, and soft materials.
