Overview

This Higher assistant technical director (visual effects) apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 4, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 06/04/2016 and typically takes 18 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Working as part of a professional visual effects department, you will undertake a broad variety of duties to support post-production projects in the film and TV industry, by creating, altering, and enhancing various forms of media.

You will work under alongside other VFX professionals on projects that combine live-action footage with computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create realistic looking effects, helping production companies save time and money on otherwise dangerous or complicated shoots. To do this, you will learn how to use specialist equipment, graphical applications, scripting languages hosted on a range of operating systems, and select the appropriate software and tools for the job.

To complete this apprenticeship, you will need to develop your knowledge of the film/tv shot pipeline and the artist’s role within it, including shot bidding, briefing, client reviews and the final delivery. You will also need to learn how to use the appropriate VFX terminology relevant for different tasks, and understand the importance of managing large scale on-line and near-line data storage used to manipulate, convert and resize various file types for final archiving.
