Overview

The automation and controls engineering technician was approved for delivery on 03/07/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 4, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 48 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

As an Automation and controls engineering technician, you will be responsible for installing and carrying out maintenance hardware and software for automation systems for organisations that are involved in or provide a service of manufacturing, logistics or utilities.

You will learn to how to install, maintain, fault-find and optimise hardware and software for automation systems, such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), and Industrial Networks (e.g. PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, PROFINET, ModBus). You will also learn how to use the physical tools and equipment needed to carry out the various technical tasks that are associated with the job role, allowing companies to maintain a high level of operational capability. Whilst adhering the industry regulations and health and safety measures.

You could work as a team leader for a group of technicians or a specific project, or you could be part of a wider team working alongside other maintenance professionals. You will present your findings to the engineering manager and organisations senior leadership members, and suggest ways they can improve their autonomous operations using your developed communication skills.
