Overview

Approved for delivery on the 14/04/2016, the aviation ground operative, Intermediate apprenticeship standard provides a level 2, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 12 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

An Aviation Ground Operative will carry out their duties in a range of environments, from commercial airports to military bases to heliports, and supports the safe turnaround of aircraft scheduled to arrive and department at specific times.

On this apprenticeship, you will work both above and below wing on an aircraft, focusing on specialising in one of five functions:

  • Aircraft handling
  • Aircraft movement
  • Fire fighter
  • Flight operations
  • Passenger services

As an apprentice, you will perform a range of servicing and inspection duties to aircraft using the appropriate tools and equipment, as you collect information for the flight crew and air traffic controllers to enable them to keep the flow of traffic moving efficiently and safely. You will develop a high level of knowledge of health and safety regulations and aviation legislation, and how to communicate them effectively with other industry workers.

Your excellent timekeeping skills will be essential as you are required to adhere to a strict schedule of flights, and you must be prepared to work at all times of days, in all kinds of weather throughout the year. You must always be reliable and work to a consistently high standard, with a keen eye for detail.
