Overview

The aviation ground specialist was approved for delivery on 14/04/2016. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 18 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

As an Aviation ground specialist, you will work in a range of aviation settings, such as commercial airports, military bases and small private airfields, as you supervise the servicing and maintenance operations that ensure the swift turnaround for aircraft to arrive and depart as scheduled.

You will learn how to perform a range of complex technical procedures to ensure the safety of an aircraft, monitoring its structural integrity and efficiency of its parts and functions. You will build a high level of knowledge of aviation health and safety regulations, and the requirements for ensuring aircraft comply with industry legislation and restrictions.

Aviation ground specialists must select from one of the following specialist functions as part of the apprenticeship standard:

  • Aircraft handling
  • Aircraft movement
  • Fire fighter
  • Flight operations
  • Passenger operations

Each of these areas will develop your knowledge of how to undertake specific tasks and provide you with the skills to carry out duties relevant to your specialism, and can provide you with the opportunity to progress to an aviation operations manager role within the industry.
