Overview

This Intermediate bicycle mechanic apprenticeship standard will provide you with a level 2, qualification. This apprenticeship standard was approved on the 22/08/2018 and typically takes 18 months to complete. However, it is important to note that the duration of the apprenticeship standard stated does not include the End-Point Assessment period.

What the course covers

Choosing this apprenticeship will provide you with the skills to build and repair bicycles and perform routine maintenance for a variety of customers. You will experience working in one of a significant number of settings, from bicycle workshops to hire centres, sports clubs and retail shops.

You will work on mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrid and electric power bicycles as you learn to identify issues and potential problems with their functionality, and provide estimates of the cost and give quotes for any work proposed. You will be able to carry out a range of services whilst working to industry standards, such as changing brake cables and chains or replacing manufacturer standard parts with improved versions, and clean, degrease and lubricate them.

You will also support customers with their warranty claims and understand the individual characteristics of all types of bikes and the technology behind their manufacture. You will undertake other retail duties, such as ordering stock, using correct documentation such as order and repair forms, and maintain the general functionality of the shop whilst always providing a high quality and professional service.
