Bioinformatics Scientist (Degree)

Using technology and computer science to find answers in the area of biology

Overview

The bioinformatics scientist (degree) was approved for delivery on 29/01/2019. This Higher apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 7, non-integrated degree qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 30 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

As a Bioinformatics Scientist, you will study and analyse large amounts of data such as raw micro array and genomic sequence data at a molecular level to complete projects and research activities.

You will typically work in an industrial, universal or commercial laboratory both independently and in small groups of other scientists to search for answers associated with various biological issues, and develop computational tools for the use of analysing other science datasets, such as health informatics and toxicology.

As part of the apprenticeship degree, you will use state-of-the-art technology and practices to determine the most suitable computational method to evaluate data from a range of life-science activities, and store it in accordance with ethical, legal and commercial standards. You will also communicate your findings to the relevant professional bodies and stakeholders, in written, digital and oral formats.

You must always maintain professional standards in the workplace in relation to intellectual property and legal compliance, and continuously build upon your knowledge of computational science to keep up with advances in the industry.
