Overview

Approved for delivery on the 25/02/2016, the boatbuilder, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 48 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Alongside developing your knowledge of the marine industry, the Boatbuilder apprenticeship will see you undertake a variety of projects based around the building of boats such as yachts and fishing vessels.

You will understand the properties of various materials and composites used in boatbuilding, such woods and metals, and how they react in varied environments, temperatures and pressure. You will also learn how to prepare the work area, scan for potential hazards and risks, and select the appropriate tools and equipment for the task to maintain efficiency.

Working from engineering drawings that use marine terminology, you will manage the budget and costings, and help allocate resources to the project, using estimating techniques to support your decision making. You will set up machinery and use jigs as templates for the installing and fitting of components, ensuring that joins are suitably treated and positioned on the vessel.

You will also learn to soften and finish edges, finalise the deck hardware and finally assess the quality of work, before producing the required documentation to manufacturers specifications. You will need commercial awareness and business acumen to deliver a finished vessel to the client successfully.
