Completing engineering work on buses and coaches
Overview
The bus and coach engineering technician was approved for delivery on 07/09/2016. This Advanced apprenticeship standard awards you with a level 3, qualification when completed. The usual duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months, but this does not include the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
As a Bus and Coach Engineering Technician, you will develop the skills and knowledge to perform a range of engineering work on buses and coaches from various manufacturers in a large workshop or garage setting.
Specialising in one of four specific trade roles, including mechanical, electrical, coachbuilder or mechelec (a combination of mechanical and electrical), you will learn how to perform inspections on vehicles using the appropriate diagnostics equipment against DVSA standards, and conduct a range of engineering work to enable it to pass mandated vehicle tests specific to its sector. To do this, you will understand the principles of mechanical and electrical vehicle design and the technology behind new emerging systems.
The apprenticeship will teach you how to conduct detailed repairs on engines, suspensions, steering, transmission and other components, and use software to collaborate vehicle control and on-board auxiliary systems. You will also be able to undertake structural restoration work, using a range of materials and fabrication processes including gas, Mig or Tig welding to repair and finish components, as you liaise with clients and update them on the progress any work commissioned for their vehicle.
