What the course covers

As a Clinical Dental Technician, you will complete clinical examinations of patients to assess their dental requirements and medical history, and produce complete or partial dentures for them to use.

You will work both in a dental laboratory, and have face-to-face contact with patients, as you treat oral conditions by providing and fitting dentures and other dental devices. To do this, you will work closely with the patient to identify the best solution to their problems, taking impressions and radiographs of their teeth and gums.

You will understand the scientific principles of dental health, including global health trends and the importance of accurately recording and storing information. You will also have the knowledge to provide advice to patients and refer them to other medical services.

You will develop a detailed understanding of infection control to ensure safety in both the practice and laboratory, and reduce risk of contamination around the clinical environment by working to industry legislation and health and safety guidelines at all times.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you can apply to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a qualified Clinical Dental Technician.
