Overview

Approved for delivery on the 16/02/2017, the composites technician, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Composite manufacture involves combining a range of materials to form a robust and light structure as an alternative to metal in the construction of aeroplanes, cars, boats, turbine blades, oil & gas rigs, bridges, trains, satellites and many other projects.

As a Composites Technician, you will commonly work in the aerospace, automotive, marine and renewables industries, providing specialised knowledge and skills to a variety of manufacturing programmes and projects. You could focus your work in the areas of design, tooling, moulding, lay-up, curing, machining, inspection, testing, repair and material production.

You will develop a high knowledge of the characteristics of composites and their uses in a range of industries and the manufacture of materials such as woven reinforcement and preforms, and how to apply IT systems like CAD to support their production. You will know how to identify and select appropriate materials and prepare mould tools and other components, and be able to read technical specification plans and drawings for part manufacture. You will also learn how to use metrology equipment in the workplace, and how to laminate geometrically complex parts following detailed client instructions.
