Overview
Approved for delivery on the 04/03/2019, the cultural heritage conservation technician, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 4, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.
What the course covers
This apprenticeship standard will equip you with the practical skills, experience and knowledge required to assess the condition of an object and execute activities to preserve its state effectively. Cultural heritage objects are typically housed in art galleries, libraries, museums, historic and ancient sites, as well as private collections.
You will work under the supervision of specialist conservators, conservation scientists or senior conservation technicians to ensure the preservation of cultural objects or collections. You will receive ongoing guidance from these specialists, but will also have considerable autonomy in conservation support tasks such as cleaning, storage, packing, environmental damages monitoring and insect/pest monitoring.
Cultural heritage conservation technicians will develop strong communication and problem-solving skills. You may have the opportunity to interact with the public to promote and engage an understanding of cultural heritage conservation.
Your time will typically be split between a conservation studio or workshop and on-site, such as a museum or gallery. Conservation technicians should expect a typical working schedule; however, be prepared for your working hours to become more intense in the lead up to an exhibition or the installation or removal of a collection.
