What the course covers

This apprenticeship standard aims to build practical skills and specialist knowledge in the provision of first-line cyber security support. This includes monitoring and detecting potential security threats and escalating these to the relevant incident report team. Typical duties include contributing to the delivery and maintenance of cyber security across an organisation, understanding vulnerabilities and threats and processing security threats confidentially.

Specifically, a cyber security technician will be responsible for patching software, installing software updates, configuring firewalls and implementing protection tools such as Anti-virus software. Cyber security technicians work in all sectors where information is held digitally and needs to be protected. This includes the finance, retail, healthcare, media, manufacturing industries as well as local authorities.

You will have the opportunity to develop a broad skill set, including the ability to manage your workload independently, use your own initiative and learn how to communicate with other professionals effectively.

Cyber security technicians tend to work in a team, and you will interact with a wide range of people, including colleagues, managers, customers and suppliers. Working opportunities include both office-based and remote.
