What the course covers

Dietitians work in the healthcare sector, providing advice and support to enable people to make lifestyle changes and better food choices to improve their health. When interacting with patients, dieticians will use advanced communication and behaviour change-skills.

Dieticians will assess, diagnose and monitor the impact of tailored nutrition advice. You will treat patients from birth to older age and will gather and analyse information from a range of sources, such as blood tests and diagnostic investigations. You will take an evidence-based approach and work closely with the patient to agree a treatment plan that works for them. This could involve consideration of factors such as diabetes, food allergies or intolerances, bowel disorders, heart disease or cancer.

You will be responsible for managing your caseload of patients, group and communities to whom you provide evidence-based dietetic care. You may also supervise dietetic assistants or support workers, and provide training to dietetic students.

Dieticians all predominantly employed by the NHS, working both in hospitals where they will interact with patients on wards and in the community such as in a GP-practice, care homes, schools or health centres. Dieticians are also employed in the food industry, including clinical nutrition companies.
