What the course covers

Ecology is a vast discipline extending to all the relationships between plants, animals, people with their environments, as well as the balances between these relationships. Ecologists play an essential role in resolving the conflicting demands between economic development and the issues related to environmental disturbance.

You will work to collect, analyse and evaluate data to make informed, evidence-based recommendations and decisions. This could include developing surveys, further investigations, writing up reports and proposing solutions to problems that arise.

Ecologists work in a wide range of organisations including in ecological consultancy, local authorities and government agencies, as well as private sector companies. Work is typically split between working in the field or on-site, and an office environment. Ecologists work both independently and in a team of professionals, always taking responsibility for the quality of work they produce. You will be proactive in identifying problems and creating innovative solutions, with a commitment to following strict ethical and safety guidelines.

This apprenticeship standard allows for the development of core knowledge and skills, alongside the option to specialise in one of the following three options: Ecological Consultant, Ecological Scientist or Landscape Ecologist.
