Overview

Approved for delivery on the 20/12/2017, the electrical power networks engineer, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 4, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 30 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The purpose of this apprenticeship standard is to develop the core knowledge, skills and competences to work on the maintenance and repair of electrical power networks.

There are six specialist roles covered in the Electrical power networks engineering profession: Asset Management Engineer, Planning Engineer, Design Engineer, Control Engineer, Electrical Project Engineer and Operational Delivery Engineer. People in all of these occupations work within the power sector, alongside other engineers, to provide engineering solutions to complex electricity network issues. They aim to safely manage the UK’s electricity supplies in both standard and abnormal conditions.

Daily tasks include undertaking engineer activities to plan, manage, control, construct, replace and repair assets on the electricity network. You will work as part of an engineering team with other professionals, including Power Network Craftspersons, Senior Engineers and business specialists such as those in finance and telecommunications. You will be responsible for the quality of your own work and must be sure to follow strict health and safety regulations at all times.

This apprenticeship standard will meet the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician.
