Overview

Approved for delivery on the 03/07/2019, the electronic systems principal engineer, Higher apprenticeship standard provides a level 7, non-degree qualification upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 36 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

The primary purpose of an electronic systems principal engineer is to provide technical engineering leadership on complex electronic projects, from conception, design, development, implementation and maintenance throughout the system’s life cycle till discontinuance. You will initiate and lead technical change, deliver innovative solutions, manage teams and mentor junior engineers or technicians.

Electronic systems are found in all parts of the economy, including consumer electronics, automotive, defence, healthcare, digital communications, robotics, artificial intelligence and the manufacturing industries. Daily tasks include interacting with a range of internal stakeholders, including engineers from other disciplines, general managers and senior leadership members of their organisation, and external stakeholders such as customers, suppliers and regulatory authorities.

An Electronic systems principal engineer will be responsible for making important decisions, mitigating technical risk factors and controlling engineering resources. You will operate with considerable autonomy and will have experience working with electronic systems at all lifecycle phases.

This apprenticeship standard allows for professional recognition at the level of a Chartered Engineer by the Engineering Council and Institution of Engineering and Technology.
