What the course covers

The primary role of an embedded electronic systems design and development engineer is to apply their knowledge, skills and experiences of electronics and software to the design of circuits or devices that provide a useful function. These devices should be designed in a way that allows for manufacture at a competitive cost, are reliable to use, and adhere to all relevant safety regulations.

You will develop specialist knowledge of general electronic principles, with the opportunity to specialise as a Hardware Engineer, Software engineer or Systems Engineer. You must be proficient with a wide range of technical skills, underpinned by academic understanding, to operate effectively in the workplace. Education in electronic systems will be supported by vocational training to develop the competencies specific to particular roles.

Embedded electronic systems design and development engineers work across several sectors; industries that rely heavily on employees in this occupation include Aerospace, Automotives and transport, robotics, telecommunications, information and computer technology, defence, energy (including renewables) and consumer electronics. You will work in one of these industries to develop the next generation of technology products, such as smartphones, electric vehicles or smart grids.
