Overview

Approved for delivery on the 27/04/2016, the engineering design and draughtsperson, Advanced apprenticeship standard provides a level 3, upon completion. This apprenticeship will typically take 42 months to complete, not including the End-Point Assessment Period.

What the course covers

Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction. People in this occupation work in a variety of industries including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear and food and drink processing plants.

You will work both at on-site locations and in an office where you will work alongside project design teams. This apprenticeship standard will help your development of specialist knowledge and understanding of the duties of an Engineering design and draughtsperson. This includes how to create technical drawings and specifications; an ability to identify factors likely to affect design decisions; produce computer-aided design models and; communicate design information to internal and external parties.

There are five main disciplines within the occupation of an Engineering Design and Draughtsperson. The apprentice will gain an understanding across these disciplines but will have the opportunity to specialise in one or more of:

  • Electrical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Control and Instrumentation Design and Draughtsperson
  • Mechanical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Piping Design and Draughtsperson
  • Structural Design and Draughtsperson.
